When Is a Breast Revision Needed?

Breast revision surgery is carried out to address issues following a breast augmentation with implants. Sometimes, the choice of the implant may be causing aesthetic or medical problems. In other cases, a patient may want to alter the size or shape of the existing implants.

-To change the implants from silicone to saline or vice versa

-To alter the size of the implants

-To address leakage of one or both implants

-To correct asymmetry in the breasts or symmastia, where the implants have merged together

Breast revision surgery generally takes between one and three hours; the length of time and the actual procedure is determined by the extent of the breast revision you require.

Moving implants, manipulating scar tissue, or increasing the size of the implant will obviously take longer than a like-for-like swap of the same-sized implant in the same position.

You will be given a general anesthetic for your surgery, and your surgeon will make incisions in the existing scars. After the old implant has been removed or replaced, your wound will be stitched, so that there will be no new scarring.

• For 48 hours after surgery, you will feel very sore, but you will be given pain relief medication to help this.
• Bruising, stiffness and swelling will also be evident, but they will begin to subside after a week or so.
• You should be able to engage in most of your everyday activities after two weeks, and return to work – many people do so after a week.
• Be careful stretching and bending, which causes strain to the area, and refrain from heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for several months.
