- The most common procedure is the lap band (adjustable gastric band) which shrinks the capacity of the stomach, limiting the amount which can be consumed. It’s a suitable option for people with a BMI between 30-40 and consists of a band placed around the upper portion of the stomach. Reversible laparoscopic surgery is quicker to perform with less recovery time.

- Gastric plication is so new, it’s still undergoing trials in America and Mexico. It involves the stomach being folded inward and sutured in place which again limits the food intake.

- Vertical sleeve gastrectomy or the gastric sleeve is an irreversible procedure that removes part of your stomach.

- One of the most invasive bariatric surgeries is roux-en-Y-gastric bypass; when small part of the stomach is used to create a pouch which, in turn is connected to the small intestine. Around 70% of the stomach is removed and a section of the small intestine is rerouted in a duodenal switch. Because of the greater curvature of the stomach, the production of the hunger hormone is greatly reduced.
